Council will soon start building 16 new netball courts across Moreland, making sure everyone has the opportunity to play, have fun, make friends and get active.
Funded through Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Inner City Netball Program,
the new courts – which were announced today by the Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren – are in line with Moreland’s Active Women and Girls Strategy, which promotes female access to sports clubs, healthier lifestyles and safe sporting facilities.
Fawkner’s Charles Mutton Reserve will be home to eight new courts, Pascoe Vale’s Cole Reserve and Oak Park’s JP Fawkner Reserve will each receive two brand new courts, and four new courts will pop up at Sewell Reserve in Glenroy.
The new facilities will encourage people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and genders to put on a netball bib and hit the court.
Female sports participation is growing fast in Victoria, with netball leading the charge. There’s the new Suncorp Super Netball competition and now more than 300,000 players across the State.
Back in 2009, only 8% of people using Moreland’s grounds for organised sporting activities were female. Council has since collaborated with local sports clubs to build that figure, which continues to grow, to 22%.
The recently announced funding is set to increase these figures even further.
Netball Victoria Chief Executive Officer Rosie King said it was great to see the project kick off.
“This project is such a crucial step in working towards meeting the needs of local netball participants.
“Currently, many locals are playing outside of the area and having more courts available in Moreland is sure to remove participation barriers, encouraging more people to play netball – and importantly get active!” said King.
Moreland Mayor Cr Helen Davidson added that Council is committed to delivering and supporting sporting facilities that encourage everyone to stay active and connected.
“We know how important it is for women and girls to stay active, healthy and happy, and Council can assist by making sporting facilities inviting and accessible.
“It’s an exciting time in Moreland; I encourage everyone to get their footwork ready and pop down to one of the new netball courts when they arrive!” said Councillor Davidson.
